Matt’s passion for crafting intimate access stories and human interest documentaries began in the early 2000s when, over a 2-year span, he directed documentary series on a legendary horse (Smarty Jones), a tiny Division 1 college basketball team that went undefeated in the regular season and rose to #1 in the rankings (Saint Joseph’s), and a boxer who left prison after five years and went on to become one of the sports’ greatest (Bernard Hopkins). Matt’s storytelling sensibilities, collaborative approach and problem-solving capabilities earned the trust of partners and network executives as he’s produced and directed doc-style projects for Netflix, Amazon Prime, ESPN, Fox, PBS, Verizon and GoPro. He has produced/directed projects featuring a variety of high profile athletes including Charles Barkley, Michael Phelps, Allen Iverson, Rickie Fowler, Novak Djokovic, Bernard Hopkins and Sugar Ray Leonard.
Matt is currently involved in several sports documentaries including a follow up to Basketball or Nothing, Fighting for Life and Iroquois vs. the World. Fighting for Life is the story of Bernard Hopkins’ first trainer, Smokey Wilson, an inmate who met and trained Bernard behind bars while serving a life sentence. Iroquois vs. The World follows one of the best lacrosse teams in the world, the Iroquois Nationals, as they fought for a 2022 World Games gold medal but, most importantly, fought for inclusion and acceptance by all.
Matt’s work expands outside of the sports world as he recently produced the documentary Hell or High Seas. The moving portrait of Navy veteran Taylor Grieger and his painful journey dealing with PTSD had an October 2021 theatrical release before landing on Amazon Prime. Matt is currently an Executive Producer on a documentary about early childhood development and parenting techniques in various Indigenous lands around the world. He is partnered with Minderoo Pictures in Western Australia on this feature-length documentary.
Matt is a partner at The WorkShop Content Studios, a full-service film and video production company. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife Emily and their cat Walter.
